Freedom for Liu Xiaobo and Chen Guangcheng

We call on the Chinese government to release Liu Xiaobo, the 2010 Nobel Laureate for peace prize who was sentenced to 11 years in prison in 2009 for writing "Charter 08", an article calling for rule of law, freedom of speech and constitutional reform; and freedom for Chen Guangcheng, a blind human rights lawyer who served 4 years and 3 months in prison for providing legal assistance to victims of forced abortion and sterilization and has been placed under house arrest since his release from prison in 2011.

CCCR Calls for Release of Nobel Laureate Liu Xiaobo

On July 22, 2014, "Chinese Coalition for Citizen's Rights", a human rights organization based in America, held a rally at the Chinese Consulate in New York demanding release of Nobel Laureate Liu Xiaobo.

Dr. Liu Xiaobo was sentenced to 11 years in prison on Christmas of 2009 on charges of "subversion of state power". The only evidence against him is an article he wrote named "Charter 08", calling for rule of law, freedom of speech, and that government be elected by the people.

In 2010, Dr. Liu Xiaobo was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize of the year. But he was not able to attend the awarding ceremony in Oslo, Norway on December 10, 2010, the World Human Rights Day, because he was still serving his prison terms.

"Chinese Coalition for Citizen's Rights" calls on the Chinese government to release Dr. Liu Xiaobo immediately, because he was only exercising his freedom of speech when he wrote this article. The imprisonment of Dr. Liu Xiaobo seriously violated his rights to freedom of speech.

Members of "Chinese Coalition for Citizen's Rights" attending today's rally include: Ming Jian, Xu Yingyu, Du Linze, Piao Yingmei, Piao Chunzi, Li Jingshun, Li Ruiying, Lin Shanshu, Ju Yuzi, Wei Haoxing, Xu Zhenai, Ding Meiling, Zhao Meiling, Shen Wenlie, Piao Yingmei, Quan Ningling.
