On August 2, 2011, Wang Dan, one of the most prominent student leaders of the 1989 Tiananmen Democracy Movement, gave a seminar on "Where Is China Heading?" in Flushing, New York.
Wang Dan talked about ways for China to have democracy. He said that the internet and young people are hopes for having a constitutional democracy in China. He said that if democracy forces come to power in the future, they should resolve the following issues: increasing the budget for education, health care for the whole population; cancel the village and town level governments; government be elected by the people; and freedom of speech, association, and press. He said that if many people take to the streets demanding freedom and rights, the government will not be able to suppress the protests with force like what happened in 1989.
Wang Dan topped the list of "the most wanted" fugitives by the Chinese government after the bloody crackdown of the Tiananmen student movement in 1989. He exiled in America in the late 1990's and studied at Harvard, where he obtained a doctor's degree.
Also speaking at the seminar were Hu Ping, chief editor of "Beijing Spring"; Wang Juntao, chairman of China Democracy Party.
About 20 members of "Coalition for Citizens Rights" attended this seminar.
