On October 11, 2011, Chinese Coalition for Citizens Rights held a rally across from the Chinese Consulate General New York demanding freedom for Chen Guangcheng.
Chen Guangcheng
Mr. Chen Guangcheng is a blind lawyer in Shandong Province, China. He was sentenced to 4 years and 3 months in 2006 for providing legal assistance to victims of forced abortion and sterilization. After his release from prison in 2010, he was placed under house arrest by local police. He and his family were not allowed to have access to the internet, they were not allowed to use cell phones, and they were not allowed to have any communication with the outside world. In March of this year, Mr. Chen Guangcheng released a video on the internet, through the help of his friends, revealing the terrible experience he and his family suffered under house arrest. His wife Yuan Weijing and he were subsequently badly beaten by the local police.
Since July 2011, many people from all over China have been trying to visit Chen Guangcheng. They were chased, beaten, and threatened by the security guards and police in Shandong Province.
Chinese Coalition for Citizens Rights calls on the Chinese government to remove Chen's house arrest and give him freedom, and allow people to visit him.
