Freedom for Liu Xiaobo and Chen Guangcheng

We call on the Chinese government to release Liu Xiaobo, the 2010 Nobel Laureate for peace prize who was sentenced to 11 years in prison in 2009 for writing "Charter 08", an article calling for rule of law, freedom of speech and constitutional reform; and freedom for Chen Guangcheng, a blind human rights lawyer who served 4 years and 3 months in prison for providing legal assistance to victims of forced abortion and sterilization and has been placed under house arrest since his release from prison in 2011.

On October 11, 2011, Chinese Coalition for Citizens Rights held a rally across from the Chinese Consulate General New York demanding freedom for Chen Guangcheng.

Chen Guangcheng

Mr. Chen Guangcheng is a blind lawyer in Shandong Province, China. He was sentenced to 4 years and 3 months in 2006 for providing legal assistance to victims of forced abortion and sterilization. After his release from prison in 2010, he was placed under house arrest by local police. He and his family were not allowed to have access to the internet, they were not allowed to use cell phones, and they were not allowed to have any communication with the outside world. In March of this year, Mr. Chen Guangcheng released a video on the internet, through the help of his friends, revealing the terrible experience he and his family suffered under house arrest. His wife Yuan Weijing and he were subsequently badly beaten by the local police.
Since July 2011, many people from all over China have been trying to visit Chen Guangcheng. They were chased, beaten, and threatened by the security guards and police in Shandong Province.
Chinese Coalition for Citizens Rights calls on the Chinese government to remove Chen's house arrest and give him freedom, and allow people to visit him.
Members of Chinese Coalition for Citizens Rights attending today's rally include: Xie Bin, Cui Chunhua, Li Jie, Zheng Yun, Yang Shunhua, Li Jun, Jin Yujie, Jin Hai, Lian Jizi, Dong Chunxiao, Jin Guangzhu, You Pingting, Yang Shannu, Jin Fengnu, Zhu Yongming, Baoqun Chen, Lin Zhifeng, Li Yuhua, Cao Jintao, Yang Ping, Quan Ningling, Hu Yanguo, Jiang Hao, Lian Jizi. Some American friends concerned about Chen Guangcheng's freedom also attended the rally.
